Promises made. Promises kept?

A non-partisan guide to the tools that track what governments in Canada and the United States promised during their last election, and what they have actually done since.

We don’t rate promises or parties. This page points you to independent trackers and official records so you can check the facts yourself.

By the numbers

How the leading independent tracker in each country currently rates the government’s campaign promises. They use different methods and cover different time periods, so the two shouldn’t be compared directly.

How to check a promise

Trackers disagree because they count and rate promises differently. These four steps get you closer to the facts.

  1. Find the promise

Start with the party’s official platform or a media promise list, not just campaign speeches.

  2. Compare trackers

Check at least two independent trackers. Some count partial progress as success; others don’t.

  3. Verify the record

Look up the bill, budget line, regulation or executive order in the official source.

  4. Check the outcome

Passing a law isn’t the same as solving the problem. Look at the data on results.
